Ride an Oyster Cart, Explore the Rich Intertidal Ecosystem, and Learn the Art of Fresh Oyster Cultivation
The NTU OIA led iNGO Academy students to the Ministry of Education's Youth Travel Spot in Fangyuan, Changhua. Guided by the Changhua Wang Gong Oyster Culture Association, students explored marine waste issues and participated in a beach cleanup. They visited intertidal wetlands in oyster carts, discovering hermit crabs and thais clavigera, and experienced the vibrant ecosystem. Students engaged in oyster farming activities, including shucking and threading oysters, wearing traditional attire, and creating unique oyster artworks. Through these activities, they learned about the regenerative value of discarded oyster shells and achieved sustainable environmental protection goals.
Students learned about the oyster farming process, growth cycles, necessary facilities, and ideal environments and seasons for cultivation. They gained insights into the current downturn in the oyster industry, where natural dependencies make farming difficult, resulting in fewer and smaller oysters and low income for farmers. However, the industry is transforming as young people return to collaborate with oyster farmers, promoting tourism and local beauty across Taiwan. Students tasted grilled oysters and local delicacies, enjoyed Wang Gong's fishing village scenery and traditional culture, and learned about harbour development history and the unique southwestern coastal ecology.
During this trip, the students also visited Lukang Old Street, where they toured the ancient Lukang Tianhou Temple, strolled through winding red-brick alleys, explored historical buildings, and tasted traditional snacks like oyster omelettes, oyster fritters, and taro balls. The final stop was Mt. Bagua Buddha Scenic Area. Here, they admired the majestic Buddha statue, learned about Buddhist teachings, and found a moment to reflect their minds.
