During my internship at the European Values Center for Security Policy (EVC), I immediately began preparing for major events, including a movie screening on volunteers supporting Ukrainians affected by the Russo-Ukrainian war. The post-screening discussion, with representatives from Taiwan, Czechia, and Ukraine, revealed the challenges of sustaining freedoms under funding shortages and insular donor policies. It made me reflect on how ordinary civilians can play a role in safeguarding democracy, particularly as Taiwan faces its own unique security challenges. Over four months, I also contributed to research on the EU’s Global Gateway, Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy, and energy sustainability. For example, we explored Taiwan’s reliance on imports for 98% of its energy and identified local alternatives such as geothermal power and biofuels. I participated in conferences on misinformation, especially targeting indigenous populations, and observed exchanges on AI, cultural cooperation, and Russia’s war in Ukraine. Though challenges included gaps in information and note taking difficulties, I gained valuable insights into the NGO sector’s role in diplomacy and international relations. This experience strengthened my appreciation of NGOs as bridges connecting societies worldwide.
